In Conversation: Alanis Obomsawin + Jason Ryle

imagineNATIVE is pleased to present In Conversation with Alanis Obomsawin + Jason Ryle an in-depth discussion of Alanis Obomsawin’s career and her timely film Honour to Senator Murray Sinclair. With over 50 documentaries, Alanis is an acclaimed frontrunner in Indigenous Cinema. She will be in conversation with long-time friend and imagineNATIVE’s former Executive Director, Jason Ryle who recently curated a large retrospective entitled Celebrating Alanis at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival.


Renowned internationally as one of the matriarchs of Indigenous Cinema, Alanis Obomsawin is a storyteller with an extraordinary body of work and breadth of practice. Initially hired as a consultant for the National Film Board, she advocated for Indigenous representation and voice, grounded in education and honouring future generations, through her filmmaking. The Abenaki director has received numerous international honours and in 2019, was named a Companion of the Order of Canada — its highest distinction. Her work continues to inspire and connect Indigenous communities.

Jason Ryle is an advocate of Indigenous stories amplifying Indigenous artist’s through his practice as a producer, programmer, curator, story editor, and arts consultant. Currently based in Toronto, Canada, he is Anishinaabe from Lake St. Martin, Manitoba. Jason was the former Executive Director of imagineNATIVE for 10 years and has worked closely with Alanis Obomsawin throughout his tenure.
